The fact that some people hold with the idea that art does not benefit society really confuses me. Do they walk through the world wearing a blindfold? Every man-made thing of beauty, every building, every image, the design of every car, the picture on their milk carton and the poster for that new movie, the font on their chocolate bar and the colours of the clothes they're wearing... all of these are the product of artists. Illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, architects - if none of these professions existed, we would live in a dull world indeed.

A love and appreciation of beauty is one of the things which separate humans from the beasts. Art is a very pure human expression. It amazes me that it's value is being forgotten in an age where it is more ubiquitous than ever before.

You'd be surprised how wide-spread that belief is. It's been getting worse in schools in the US for quite a while; especially in rural areas where such programs are amongst the first cut when it comes to budget.
